EMCY - Enabling Migrants to Cycle (quantitative survey)

Description
+++ Survey motivation +++
A consortium comprising of the consultancies (1) stape e.U. URBAN CONSULTING (project lead) and (2) klarFakt together with (3) Vienna University's Vienna Visual Anthropology Lab and (4) TU Wien's Research center of Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Protection to study how the interests of people with a migration background can be represented more fairly in research? This question has been researched on the topic of cycling in everyday life: What obstacles do migrants and their children face in using cycling as a means of transport in Vienna? Migrants, or people with a migrant background, were defined as residents of Vienna who migrated from countries outside the EU from 1995 onwards.
+++ Further project information +++
Further information on this study named "EMCY - Enabling migrants to cycle" are available on the project lead's website: https://www.stape.eu/.
+++ Survey contents +++
Migrants in Vienna were surveyed for:
*) Possession of mobility equipment,
*) Everyday mobility behavior,
*) Ability to cycle and frequency of cycling,
*) Needs to start/increase cycling (frequency),
*) Perception of Vienna as a cycling-friendly city,
*) Experiences with cycling tests,
*) Participation in surveys on other topics,
*) Variables for classifying individuals and households,
*) Interest in receiving information on further project activities and their contact details. These latter questions have been erased from the present dataset, file (1).
+++ Survey implementation +++
The survey was implemented (i) on paper and (ii) online using the polling tool "TUsurvey", a TU Wien derivative of LimeSurvey. In both variants, the survey was made available in eight languages:
*) German
*) Arabic
*) Bosnian
*) Farsi
*) Croatian
*) Serb
*) Somali
*) Turkish
+++ Survey distribution +++
The survey was conducted via three channels:
*) In the first channel, EMCY reached out to migrants via partner organisations working in the field of integration. Here, low-threshold workshops on everyday cycling were integrated into ongoing German language courses, whilst cycling lessons and bike repair workshops were also offered; participants were asked to complete the questionnaire as part of these activities.
*) In the second approach, EMCY collaborated with three primary schools with a high proportion of children from migrant backgrounds and sought to reach the children’s parents. Announced by the headteachers, the parent surveys took place outside the school before and after school hours.
*) In the third approach, surveys were conducted in public spaces, such as pedestrian zones.
+++ Survey duration +++
The survey was conducted from 04/2025 to 09/2025.
+++ Data manipulation +++
*) Person-related questions and answers G09Q29, G10Q30_SQ001, G10Q30_SQ003, G10Q30_SQ002, G10Q30_SQ004, G10Q31_SQ001, G10Q31_SQ002 and G10Q31_SQ003 were deleted from file (1).
*) The variable "submitdate" was deleted as it included identical dates given by the survey tool by default.
*) All lines with variable "filter_zustimmung" = 0 were deleted, as these were the participants who explicitly refused to give their consent to the processing of their data on the paper questionnaire.
*) For transparency reasons all variable descriptions of these questions and answers remain in file (2).
*) In the single-choice question G08Q25 (‘Which language is your first language (mother tongue)?’), multiple responses were frequently recorded on the paper questionnaires. As a result, a new variable was created to specify a single language: G08Q25_S. In cases of multiple responses, this variable recorded the language assumed to be geographically furthest from Austria. Theoretical examples of this are: German and Turkish --> Turkish; Bosnian and Turkish --> Turkish; Bulgarian and Cantonese --> Cantonese. For all those questionnaires in which only one answer was selected, that answer was retained.
+++ Sample size +++
A total of 375 people completed the questionnaire, 312 on paper and 63 online. As 6 participants explicitly refused to give their consent to the processing of their data on the paper questionnaire, a total of 369 responses were ultimately included in the analysis. Nine questionnaires (2.4 per cent of those included; 5 people from Germany, 1 from Greece, 2 from the Netherlands and 1 from the United Kingdom) were completed by people who did not meet the target group definition – residents of Vienna who had migrated from countries outside the EU since 1995 – but these were nevertheless included in the analysis.
