Description

Evaluating the Representativeness of PTSQL in Austria from One-Day-A-Year Using Openly Available GTFS Data

Public Transport Service Quality Levels (PTSQL) are used to classify areas in Austria according to the availability and quality of public transport services. The current approach may be considered insufficient for making reliable statements about certain regions, as it evaluates PTSQL based only on data from two days per year.
This project evaluates the current approach and assesses whether an improved method could provide more accurate information. To conduct this examination, the PTSQL for multiple days in 2024 is calculated and analyzed using similar methods as the current approach by Österreichische Raumordnungskonferenz (ÖROK), see [1].

Context and methodology

This dataset was created using by calculating the

  1. Calculating the stop categories of public transport stops in Austria
  2. Creating isochrones around the stops
  3. Calculating the area and population covered by the PTSQL and comparing it to the existing solution, see [2].

The OEROK explain their approach in [1], which served as basis for our calculations.

Technical details

Structure

  • stops.zip: contains csv files with the stop category for each PT stop in Austria for each used day
  • isochrones.zip: contains the created isochrones (PTSQL) for the used days in GeoPackage format (.gpkg)
  • evaluation.zip: contains csv files with results of area and population covered by PTSQL
  • figures.zip: figures visualizing some results

Software and Code

The Python code used to create the files can be found here: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22869663

The GeoPackages can either be used with Python libraries such as geopandas or with GUI based tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS.
