Both files contain a list of longitude/latitude coordinates of synthetic populations of Austria generated by Generic Population Concept - Agent-Based Model (GEPOC ABM) for the reference date January 1, 2025.

Context and methodology

The datasets were created in the context of the spatial parametrization of the agent-based population model GEPOC ABM. The sampling of coordinates is done in two stages:

For every municipality, the number of coordinates to be sampled is determined by its census count on January 1, 2025.

A coordinate from within the municipality region is sampled. The two files were generated with different sampling methods:

Uniform Sampling: Coordinates are sampled from a uniform distribution over the spatial extent of the municipality, and filtered by the Global Human Settlement Population Layer - only coordinates in populated raster cellss are kept.

Building-based Sampling: Coordinates are sampled from a distribution based on OpenStreetMap building data, with the distribution weights being proportional to the living area of a building, i.e., its base area times its number of building levels. The discrete set of possible coordinates lies within the building geometries.

Files

gepoc_abm_synthetic_population_coordinates_austria_20250101_uniform_sampling.csv contains the synthetic population coordinates generated by the uniform sampling method.

gepoc_abm_synthetic_population_coordinates_austria_20250101_building_sampling.csv contains the synthetic population coordinates generated by the building-based sampling method.</description>
